- THE TANNERY
Oldest industry of GIVET which dates back to the XVe century.
- In 1750, five tanners artisans, established on the bank of the "Houille" river, transformed the skin of the bovine in to leather. The leather of GIVET was very appraised, particulaly by the clothing shops of the imperial army.
- THE GLUE OF GIVET :
After the disappearance of the tanneries, the production of glue took over using pratically the same raw materials. Before the 2nd world war, the two ROUSSELOT factories produced about 1000 tonnes of glue and gelatin per year..
- PIPE FACTORY :
Old activity of GIVET, dating from the XVIIIe century. For the experts, Jean GAMBIER established his factory next to the "Mont d'Haurs", at the end of the XVIIIe century. This production of pipes in clay prospered until the advent of the wood pipe (more resistants and more economics), towards 1870.
- THE CERAMIC :
The GAMBIER factory searching new openings turned towards the production of ceramic, in the second part of the XIXe century.
- THE GILBERT LEAD PENCIL:
Universally known, this factory was funded in 1829. For the sidelights on history, the wood which supports the lead in graphite was "
Florida cedar ".
- THE PORT :
The Meuse was here, the station was built but to complete the fluvial and railway trafic, something important missed :
Thousands and thousands tonnes of coal, wood, fathering, food, coke, metals, etc ..., were stocked and handled in this site.
The SANARA society occupied this part during numerous years, sending in transit thousands of cars from Europe to France. Today, the site of the port is reconverted into a centre of harbour activities.
